I am presently conducting research on how self-rated Africentrism impacts African-American students' use of drugs and/or alcohol and risky sex behaviors. I am also examining how self-rated Africentrism correlates with African-American student appreciation of different types of "hip-hop/rap" lyrics.
I am now developing research protocols to do an in-depth analysis of how African-American men under the age of 50 respond to and cope with the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.
I am co-authoring a textbook entitled: "African-Americans, Psychology and The Law: The Residuals of Slavery." Consistent with this book, I am also conducting research on how attributions are made about the perceived likelihood of success for low-income African-American males as a function of race and SES of the perceiver.
I have received grant support from the National Science Foundation for research conducted on factors that impact insanity defense verdict selections. I am a three time nominee and finalist for the Amoco Teaching Excellence Award. I have received two awards for teaching excellence on the departmental level. I am a past American Psychological Association Minority Fellow.
I currently teach courses in the areas of experimental psychology, statistics, learning, introduction to psychology, and psychology and the law. I also served as Board Director for an organization that serves the homeless population of Raleigh. I am a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.
And, most of all, I am the proud father of three lovely children: Marisa, age 19; Micah, age 17; and Madelynn, age 14.
